Terawave Announces GPON Deployment In Switzerland

Hayward, CA - Terawave Communications recently announced that Terawave Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) optical access products are now delivering live triple-play traffic in several multiple-dwelling units (MDUs) being served by Stadtantennen AG, in Baar, Switzerland. Stadtantennen AG is the local triple-play service provider in the City of Baar and a member of the Digital Cable Group (DCG), the second largest cable conglomerate in Switzerland. The project was realized by Terawave's channel partner Broadband Networks AG, the leading solution provider and system integrator for access network operators in Switzerland.

Stadtantennen AG has installed a Terawave TW-800 GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in their hub site that is capable of providing voice, data, and video services to up to thousands of subscribers over just four optical fibers. One TW-148 Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is installed in each of several 6-unit apartment buildings, providing 10/100/1000Base-T triple-play Ethernet-based services, including data services, Internet access and carrier class voice services. The Terawave GPON equipment has IP multicast and sophisticated QoS mechanisms that maintain strict, differentiated carrier class quality for all services. It also has many differentiating software features – such as auto-discovery, pre-provisioning, automated upgrades, and full carrier-class management – that simplify operations and reduce labor costs.

"Terawave GPON represents a significant evolution of our triple play infrastructure from traditional hybrid-fiber coax," stated Mr. Rolf Jung, CEO and President of Stadtantennen AG. "Terawave appears to understand the importance and special needs of access network operators like cable operators, addressing multiple markets including residential and business customers. Their system provides very high bandwidth and service quality, and they provide many product options to address differences in subscriber needs and subscriber density in the buildings. We are very proud to initiate a new area for our access network infrastructure going live on June 1st."

"Switzerland has a cable penetration of over 90%, so cable operators are therefore very well positioned in the triple-play business in Switzerland," remarked Frank Lockwood, Executive VP sales and marketing for Terawave. "We are very focused on providing the best solution set for access network operators, including cable operators, for residential SFH and MDU sites as well as small-to-medium business sites."

"Access Networks operators realize the need for higher capacity on their network, and the need for IP centric network infrastructure. With the Terawave GPON solution we are very happy to introduce leading edge technology that easily meets the capacity and service quality needs," states Mr. Gregor Eugster, Managing Director of Broadband Networks. "Additionally, operation becomes much easier, a fact that HFC network operators very much value. Together with Terawave, we have been able to integrate the GPON solution into the existing IP environment of the operator Stadtantennen AG, deploying all existing services (data, voice and video) and opening the door for future services."
